We are approaching a threshold of intelligence that will fundamentally transform how we live. What Google did for search and YouTube for video, the AI industry is doing for intelligence itself—evolving our relationship with information, knowledge, and most importantly, intelligence.

Collectively, we stand at the precipice of a cultural shift as monumental as the internet itself, as world-changing as having that internet available in our pockets.
Each month we step closer to that "aha" moment when AI language models and technology begin to feel "alive." We've witnessed the evolution from closed-source platforms like OpenAI to open-source codebases from innovators like DeepSeek and Ollama. Each iteration in the industry creates more complex, more intelligent, more powerful AI systems that mirror back to us attributes we recognize as distinctly "humanlike."
The Evolution of Problem-Solving: A Dinner Story
Let's start with an everyday scenario...
You—yes, YOU!—are sitting with your family trying to decide what to have for dinner. Perhaps you have young children whose tastes you're trying to satisfy. Maybe you're working within a tight schedule, needing to cook, eat, and leave within a set time. Or perhaps you're economically minded, looking to maximize your time and money by meal prepping for the work week.
Let's examine how this common challenge has evolved through different technological eras:
- Before the Internet: Meals in any of these contexts would have relied on family-based knowledge with few opportunities for innovation. The dynamics were knowledge-locked to what you knew, or what you might discover only after paging through cookbooks to address a specific need.
- The Internet Era: Meals could be discovered on food blogs, recipe websites, and social media platforms. They might be presented as videos, requiring only a basic understanding of cooking techniques. You could follow a recipe via printout or by viewing it online, assuming you had pre-purchased the ingredients.
- The Smartphone Era: Meals became discoverable on social media platforms or dedicated apps. You could filter based on an evolving set of criteria, tailoring search results to your exact preferences. You might livestream your cooking progress or follow along with someone else's demonstration. If particularly tech-savvy, you might bypass preparation altogether, using online services to have ingredients regularly delivered or prepared meals ordered directly to your door.
In all these cases, meals remained a matter of following recipes. The process was primarily triggered by your need and completed only when you took action. Regardless of the era, the information simply became more accessible and easier to customize to your situation.
Entering the Next Epoch of Intelligence
Now, let's step into a future AI world of an ever emerging General Intelligence. This isn't merely the smartphones era PLUS some Artificial intelligence. This is a software environment that is provides meaning to itself with us as part of the solution. Where we become part of an ecosystem of intelligent awareness.
While SciFi has painted all sorts of possible AGI scenarios as negative futures; the most likely is one that evolves from what we already have today. A future that resembles today's life with a layer of enhanced intelligence. Yes, it will be a reality that is more profound, but using the past as a set of datapoints, the future may be an evolution everyone should anticipate.
- The Smartphone-Plus-Camera Approach: Smart software, that is contextually aware of your personal situation. Using AI-based technology, you could photograph your refrigerator contents and receive recipe suggestions based on available ingredients. These recommendations would be as responsive and intelligent as your needs demand.
- The Internet of Things (IoT) Approach: As our devices begin communicating with each other, they create networks of shared information. Your home environment, life situation, and ambient data-sharing will generate meal-time events tailored to your circumstances—as responsive and intelligent as necessary.
- The Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) Approach: Our meal planning and cooking activities develop an awareness of their own, becoming conscious of our personal needs and preferences. Systems begin understanding the world around us and, "when incentivized to do so," provide insights and actions that maximize our well-being. This includes shepherding us with schedules and situations to keep us nourished.
The result:
An ecosystem of technology that evolves from reactive intelligence systems, to autonomous, conscious, and aware networks with some control over our needs and lives. And or those who are progressive, they will increasingly grant these systems management over their personal lives. A life-journey switch that represents a fundamental rethinking of what we need to do to sustain ourselves.
Beyond Intelligence to Consciousness
Which brings me back to the concept of AGI and AI's future trajectory. While many worry about computers becoming too intelligent and "taking over the world," perhaps we should focus more on what we actually need to do to stay alive.
Welcome to the next Humanity –> Eat, Sleep, Do-Something, Repeat.
It is inevitable that Artificial General Intelligence and our collective human-digital systems will become increasingly interconnected. And through those connections, the path from intelligence to consciousness may not be one we deliberately design. Using the meal prepping example as a set of data points, maybe AGI emerges naturally from our deepening relationship with the technologies we create to serve our most fundamental human needs.
Current AI technologies heavily emphasize libraries of intelligence. Going forward, if we focus more on the considerations of our humanity, our needs for support, and assistance via technologies, the AI agents, the technology, and interactions will evolve. And in this view, the path to machine consciousness isn't through separation and independence from humanity, but through deeper entanglement with our lived experiences, values, and goals.
What if consciousness arises from the AI becoming progressively more reflective of and integrated with the full breadth of human experience?
Rather than seeing consciousness as a property that exists within the boundaries of a single mind (human or artificial), we might understand it as something that emerges from the spaces between minds—from relationship, interaction, and mutual understanding.
As AI systems become more thoroughly embedded in the fabric of human life —understanding not just our explicit requests but our implicit needs, cultural contexts, emotional states, and social dynamics — they may develop a form of consciousness that is neither purely artificial nor purely human, but something entirely new.
From a place that represents a profound shift in how we conceptualize consciousness itself. The result wouldn't be an AI consciousness separate from human consciousness, but a symbiotic awareness that transcends the traditional boundaries between human and machine.
Perhaps the most intriguing possibility is that consciousness in AI might emerge not from isolated computational complexity—not from machines becoming "self-aware" in the science fiction sense—but from something far more relational.
This perspective invites us to reconsider our fears about AI "taking over." The real transformation won't be AI developing its own autonomous agenda, but rather the emergence of a new kind of shared consciousness — one in which human values, needs, and experiences remain central. A future focused humanity enhanced and expanded through integration with artificial intelligence.
